Hotel Description

Look, I’ll be honest – when I first walked up to Maison Kammerzell, I thought I was looking at some sort of medieval museum that accidentally started renting rooms. This place sits right on Place de la Cathédrale, and I mean *right* there – you’re literally staring up at one of Europe’s most incredible Gothic cathedrals from your doorstep. The building itself is this gorgeous half-timbered Renaissance structure that’s been around since the 1400s, all carved wooden beams and fairy-tale windows. It’s actually one of the most photographed buildings in Strasbourg, which means you’ll be dodging tourists with selfie sticks pretty much constantly during the day.

The rooms are… well, they’re quirky. You know what you’re getting into when you book a historic property like this – nothing’s perfectly square, the floors have character (translation: they creak and slope a bit), and don’t expect modern hotel chain uniformity. But honestly, that’s part of the charm. My room had these thick wooden beams running across the ceiling and windows that looked out over the cathedral square. The morning light hitting those stone spires is something else. Fair warning though – if you’re a light sleeper, bring earplugs. The cathedral bells start up early, and the square gets lively with street performers and tour groups. I actually grew to love the sounds, but my travel companion was less thrilled about the 6 AM wake-up calls.

What really sets this place apart is the restaurant downstairs – it’s been serving Alsatian cuisine for centuries, and you can feel that history in every corner. The dining room looks like where medieval merchants would have made their deals, all dark wood and stained glass. The choucroute is phenomenal (I mean, you’re in Alsace – it better be), and their wine list focuses on local Rieslings and Gewürztraminers that pair perfectly with the hearty regional dishes. Service can be a bit slow when they’re packed, which is most evenings, but the staff knows their stuff about both the food and the building’s history. Parking is basically impossible right there – you’ll want to use one of the underground garages a few blocks away and walk. The Austerlitz garage is your best bet, maybe a five-minute walk through the cobblestone streets of Petite France. Actually, that walk is pretty lovely, especially in the evening when the old buildings are all lit up. The hotel’s location puts you right in the heart of everything – you can walk to the Ponts Couverts in ten minutes, and all those cute winstubs (Alsatian taverns) are scattered around the nearby streets.

  • We enjoyed the hotel’s location in historic Strasbourg – Jane from United States – 24 July 2025 (7/10)

    Excellent location.

What could be improved: We were traveling with another couple and had 2 rooms. In one guest room the air conditioner placement made it difficult to feel the air.
In the second guest room the ac was properly placed and there was no problem.
