Hotel Description

You know what caught me off guard about Hôtel Couvent du Franciscain? The name makes it sound all monastery-serious, but this place actually has real personality tucked into its historic bones. I mean, yeah, it’s housed in what used to be a convent – you can still see some of the original stonework if you look closely – but they’ve done something pretty clever with the renovation without going overboard on the “boutique hotel” thing.

The location on Rue du Faubourg de Pierre is honestly perfect if you want to feel like you’re staying somewhere locals actually live. It’s just far enough from the tourist madness around the cathedral that you won’t hear groups of teenagers stomping around at midnight, but close enough that you can walk to Petite France in about fifteen minutes (I timed it). The morning I checked out, I grabbed coffee at this tiny place called Café Bretelles just two blocks down – turns out half the neighborhood goes there, which is always a good sign. Parking’s a bit of a puzzle though, fair warning. There’s street parking if you’re lucky, but I’d honestly just use the tram system – the Faubourg de Pierre stop is literally around the corner.

The rooms themselves are… well, they’re three-star rooms, so don’t expect marble bathrooms or anything fancy. But they’re thoughtfully put together – decent beds, windows that actually open (surprisingly rare these days), and the heating works properly, which matters more than you’d think in Strasbourg winters. I stayed in one of the rooms facing the courtyard, and honestly, the quiet was amazing after spending a few nights near Place Kléber where the trams start running at dawn. The Wi-Fi’s solid too, which saved me when I had to jump on a work call. Some of the bathrooms are a bit snug – I’m talking airplane-tiny for a few of the singles – but everything’s clean and the water pressure’s actually pretty good. The breakfast isn’t going to win any awards, but it’s real food, not just pastries from a bag, and they had decent coffee when I was there in March. Staff’s genuinely helpful too – the guy at reception gave me directions to this amazing choucroute place that I never would’ve found otherwise.

Reviews

  • Good – G from Netherlands – 17 July 2025 (7/10)

The single room was small but comfortable. Good bed, good shower. Didn't use breakfast as I needed to leave before 7.

What could be improved: The hotel's website rejected my payment, and the receptionist recommended not to book directly via him, so I used this booking website while standing at the reception desk, which was a bit weird.

  • Simple, comfortable, very friendly and helpful. Great neighbourhood. – Alison from France – 18 April 2025 (8/10)

Fabulous location. The street has everything you need and it’s soo close to the city center.

What could be improved: It’s not a luxury hotel. But if you are looking for a simple, clean hotel in a great location, with a down to earth and very friendly staff; this a great place to stay.

  • Superb – Helmut from Austria – 14 April 2025 (9/10)

  • Christmas in Strasburg – Shirley from United States – 21 December 2024 (8/10)

access to downtown was really great we were at the Christmas market in about 10 mins. Reception lady was very friendly!

What could be improved: I would have preferred breakfast be free or 10euro. 14 seemed high

  • All fine – Chris from United Kingdom – 9 December 2024 (8/10)

Everything was fine, small but clean room and good choice at breakfast

  • Very good – Yasmin from Denmark – 17 November 2024 (8/10)

Nice location with good restaurants at the corner.

What could be improved: It’s fine but breakfast can have more choice. Also the soundproofing is horrible! Every noise from the street you can hear very clear!

  • Close to all the sights, restaurants etc, so very convenient – Susan from United Kingdom – 17 September 2024 (8/10)

    Wide choice for breakfast

What could be improved: Ideally no nearby building noise, but this was only sporadic and not the hotel's fault!

  • Good – Gary from United Kingdom – 14 September 2024 (7/10)

Bed and pillows very comfortable and clean

What could be improved: Room was a bit small no place to put cases
