Hotel Description
So I stumbled across Studio Or in Krutenau last spring, and honestly? This little gem completely changed how I think about staying in Strasbourg. The address says Rue d’Or, which sounds fancy, but it’s actually this quiet residential street that feels miles away from the tourist chaos – even though you’re literally a 10-minute walk from the cathedral.
The thing about Krutenau that most people don’t realize is it’s where actual Strasbourgeois live and hang out. You’ve got the Ill river right there (perfect for morning jogs, if that’s your thing), and all these local bistros that don’t even bother translating their menus into English because they’re not trying to impress tourists. The studio itself is in one of those beautiful Alsatian buildings with the timber framing – you know the kind – but inside it’s been updated in this really thoughtful way. Clean lines, decent Wi-Fi that actually works, and a kitchenette that’s small but functional. I mean, I’m not cooking elaborate meals on vacation, but having a proper coffee setup in the morning? Game changer.
What really sold me was the neighborhood vibe, though. There’s this bakery called Maison Burrus about two blocks away where locals queue up every morning – their kougelhopf is ridiculous – and in the evenings, you’ll find students from the university area spilling out of the wine bars along Rue de Zurich. It’s that sweet spot where you feel like you’re experiencing real Strasbourg life without sacrificing comfort. The tram stop at Université is super close, so getting to Petite France or the European quarter is easy, but honestly, some nights I just grabbed a bottle of Riesling from the corner shop and sat by the river watching the light change on the half-timbered houses. The studio stays pretty quiet even on weekends – these old buildings have thick walls, and the street doesn’t get much through traffic.
Check-in was refreshingly straightforward, none of that overly formal hotel dance, and parking… well, it’s Strasbourg, so street parking can be a bit of a hunt, but there’s usually something within a block or two if you’re patient. The place has that 8.5 rating for good reason – it’s not trying to be the fanciest spot in town, but everything just works. Clean, comfortable, and you wake up feeling like you’re staying in a real neighborhood instead of some sterile hotel bubble. If you’re the type who wants to explore beyond the postcard shots and actually get a feel for how this city breathes, Studio Or is exactly where you want to be.
