Look, I’ve stayed in plenty of places in Strasbourg’s old town, but this duplex actually surprised me. You’re literally a two-minute walk from the cathedral – I mean, you can hear the bells from the apartment, which is either charming or mildly annoying depending on how you feel about being woken up at 7 AM (honestly, I found it kind of magical after the first morning). The location on Rue des Hallebardes puts you right in the heart of Carré d’or, which locals know is the sweet spot – touristy enough that everything’s walkable, but the street itself doesn’t get the insane foot traffic of the main cathedral plaza.

The duplex setup is what really makes this place work. Downstairs you’ve got your living space with these gorgeous exposed beams that actually look original, not like someone slapped them up for Instagram appeal. The kitchen’s small but functional – I made coffee every morning and managed a simple dinner one night without feeling cramped. Upstairs is where you’ll sleep, and the bedroom has this interesting slanted ceiling situation that makes it feel cozy rather than cramped. Fair warning though, if you’re over six feet tall, watch your head on the stairs. The whole place has that slightly-uneven-floors thing that comes with 17th-century buildings, which I personally love but some people find unsettling. What impressed me most was how quiet it stays despite being in such a central spot – the building seems to block out most of the street noise, though you’ll still catch conversations from late-night cathedral visitors if you keep the windows open.

You know what really sold me on this place? The owner clearly knows Strasbourg. There’s a little notebook with actual useful recommendations – not just the obvious tourist spots, but where to grab the best tarte flambée on a Tuesday night (Chez Yvonne gets packed, but there’s this smaller place on Rue du Maroquin that’s equally good), which boulangerie opens earliest for croissants, that sort of insider knowledge. The 8.7 rating makes sense – it’s not luxury, but it’s thoughtfully done and the location is genuinely unbeatable. I walked to Petite France in fifteen minutes, hit the covered bridges, browsed the weekend market at Place Kléber, all without needing transportation. Parking’s tricky like everywhere in the old town, but there’s a public garage about five minutes away that won’t break the bank. For three stars, you’re getting way more character and local flavor than you’d find at some generic hotel, plus the duplex layout makes it feel more like staying in someone’s carefully curated pied-à-terre than a rental property.

  The really good location, you step out basically straight into the cathedral square. We had a problem with the hob not working. I contacted the owner and by the afternoon the next day a new one had been fitted. Great service.

  One street away from the cathedral, right in the thick of it! Set behind a huge locked door, the unit is ground floor and basement. Stairs were easy to negotiate large suitcases down to the bedroom.
  Kitchen was adequate, with enough pots and pans but only two electric hot plates, a microwave but no oven.
  No noise from the pedestrian traffic outside (and there was significant pedestrian traffic out there).
  
  What could be improved: Cradle for the shower head was broken, but that won’t take much to fix
