Hotel Description

You know what struck me first about Au Cerf d’Or? It’s tucked right into Place de l’Hôpital in a way that feels completely natural – like it’s been part of Strasbourg’s fabric forever. I mean, this isn’t some flashy chain hotel trying to make a statement. It’s honestly more like staying at your well-traveled aunt’s place, if your aunt happened to run a charming 3-star operation in the heart of Alsace. The building itself has that solid, no-nonsense French provincial feel, and when you walk through those doors, there’s this immediate sense of… well, authenticity, I guess. The kind of place where the staff actually knows the neighborhood because they’ve probably lived here their whole lives.

What really won me over was how the restaurant downstairs becomes this gentle hum of conversation in the evenings – not loud enough to keep you awake, but just present enough to remind you that you’re staying somewhere real people actually gather. The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid 3-star: clean, comfortable, with those thick European linens that somehow always feel more substantial than what we get back home. Nothing fancy, but everything works properly, which honestly matters more than most people realize when you’re actually traveling. Parking can be a bit of a puzzle in this part of Strasbourg (the old city doesn’t exactly love cars), but the hotel staff knows all the tricks – they’ll point you toward the nearby public lots without that exasperated sigh you sometimes get in tourist areas.

Here’s the thing that really sets Au Cerf d’Or apart though – it sits in this perfect sweet spot where you’re genuinely in old Strasbourg, not just looking at it from some sterile hotel district. You can walk to the cathedral in maybe ten minutes, and the Petite France quarter is close enough that you’ll probably wander over there multiple times during your stay. But you’re also on a quieter square, so you get that neighborhood feel without the constant tourist shuffle right outside your window. The 8.2 rating makes total sense to me – it’s not trying to be luxury, but it delivers exactly what it promises with this sort of effortless competence that you only find in family-run places that have figured out their rhythm over the years. If you want to feel like you’re staying in Strasbourg rather than just visiting it, this is honestly one of those spots that gets it right.

Reviews

  • No swimming. – Philip from United States – 10 July 2025 (7/10)

    Near to tram & shops.

What could be improved: It advertises itself as having a pool. This is technically not a lie. However, to be able to do laps in this pool, I would need to to be roughly the size of a rabbit.

  • Great stay – Michael from United Kingdom – 4 July 2025 (9/10)

    The location is great.

What could be improved: We had thought the spa was included for 1 hr a day from the description but it is not. However it was just €20 for us to have exclusive use which was lovely

  • Great little hotel in heart of Strasboug – Julie from United Kingdom – 22 June 2025 (9/10)

What could be improved: Pool was a little small

  • Appreciate the location – Rika from Japan – 6 May 2025 (7/10)

    Location, friendly staff

What could be improved: Two of the lights in the were blinking, and should have been replaced before we checked in.

  • Superb – Camilla from Switzerland – 25 March 2025 (9/10)

The building is beautiful and in a great location . The welcome was warm and friendly I had a lovely room very comfortable. I paid to use the spa which was fabulous after a day sightseeing. I also had dinner in the restaurant and had breakfast . Food was fantastic and all the staff were so kind.r

  • Easy and relaxing. – Utku from Turkey – 2 March 2025 (9/10)

The location is good for city center, food and beverage places are very close. Room design is simple and relaxing. There is a big park place which is closed area (with payment) very near with 5 minutes by walking. Breakfast is standart according to other hotels. Staffs are very polite and helpful. Room is clean enough.

What could be improved: No any negative.

  • Great location for sightseeing Strasbourg – Martin from United Kingdom – 3 October 2024 (8/10)

Located just a few minutes walk from the city centre. Lovely old building with some unique features. Staff were fantastic. Breakfast was cold buffet type but really good, great variety.

What could be improved: Our room was not in the same building but a few doors down the street. Although very comfortable and all the required facilities the room was a little tired and could do with updating.

  • Superb – Steven from United Kingdom – 8 September 2024 (9/10)

Breakfast was good, Spa was lovely and staff were very friendly.

  • Wonderful location, excellent beds and rooms, very clean facilities and perfectly located. Friendly staff and amazing sp – Michael from United Kingdom – 27 August 2024 (8/10)

Very well presented and clean facilities. The staff were friendly. Easy access to the room late at night.

What could be improved: It lists on booking.com that the price for the stay included 1hr30min at the spa but this is not the case. The message is a question from a client and a response from Elodie from hotel management. We paid extra for the spa.

  • Very good – Line from Norway – 5 August 2024 (8/10)

The hotel is situated very centrally in Strasbourg, only a short walk from the old town and amazing cathedral. The rooms were Big, spacious and the beds very comfortable. We also enjoyed the spa and sauna after a long drive in our car. The service was great.

What could be improved: Unfortunately we forgot a jacket in our room when we left, and it seems to have been stolen. We have not been able to retrieve it.
