Hotel Description
You know what really caught me off guard about Les Lumières de la ville? The name sounds all fancy and Parisian, but this place actually feels like proper Strasbourg — and I mean that in the best way possible. It’s tucked on Rue du Général Gouraud, which honestly isn’t the prettiest street in the city, but here’s the thing: you’re literally a five-minute walk from Place Kléber and maybe eight minutes from the cathedral. The location is sort of perfect if you want to duck away from the tourist crowds but still be right in the thick of things.
The hotel itself has this interesting mix going on — it’s definitely trying to be boutique-y with some modern touches, but you can tell the building has stories. I mean, most buildings in Strasbourg do, right? The lobby’s got these warm lighting fixtures (hence the name, I guess) that actually work really well in the evening when you’re coming back from dinner. Speaking of which, the staff here genuinely knows their stuff about restaurants. Not just the obvious touristy ones, but they pointed me toward this little winstub on Rue des Tonneliers that I never would’ve found otherwise. The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid four-star — nothing groundbreaking, but the beds are comfortable and the bathrooms are modern enough. Pro tip though: if you’re a light sleeper, ask for a room facing the courtyard. The street side gets a bit of traffic noise, especially during morning rush hour when people are heading to work in the EU district.
Here’s what I really appreciated — check-in was smooth (they speak excellent English if your French is rusty), and they’ve got this small but well-curated selection of local wines available in the evening. Nothing fancy, just a nice touch that shows they get what travelers actually want after a day of walking around the Petite France area. The breakfast is honestly better than it needs to be, with proper local pastries and decent coffee. Parking can be a bit tricky since it’s city center, but there’s a public garage about two blocks away, and the hotel staff will give you all the details. I stayed here in September when the weather was still nice, and the whole area comes alive in the evenings — you’ve got locals heading out for dinner, students from the university, that nice energy you get in a real working city rather than just a tourist destination. Would I stay here again? Absolutely. It’s not going to blow your mind, but it gets all the important stuff right, and honestly, that’s exactly what you want when you’re trying to explore a city like Strasbourg.

Beautiful interior and Strasbourg city center at your fingertips 🙂 – Anna from Poland – 5 July 2025 (10/10)
The location is ideal, despite being in the city centre, the flat is very quiet (you can sleep with the windows open). There is a tram stop 2 minutes from the building. On foot you can reach the cathedral in 15 minutes and Petit France in about 25 minutes. The host welcomed me nicely, he was very helpful and also left lots of testy treats for breakfast or lunch 😉
What could be improved: –A calm peaceful haven in a gorgeous building, situated perfectly for walking around Strasbourg. Great place to stay if y – Carissa from United States – 14 May 2025 (9/10)
Great view, great location for walking into the town center and exploring by foot, beautiful building, wonderful and thoughtful host. Nice neighborhood. Great place for a solo traveler wanting a safe, peaceful place to stay.
What could be improved: Not having a working washing machine—this would be ideal for longer stays. Also, just know there are narrow windy wooden stairs—73, to be exact—and no elevator. It is part of the building’s charm, but definitely a workout, and if you have big/heavy luggage, it will be difficult (backpack was just fine). Also, the location is great, except you will get some street noise (some passing cars, motorcycles). But it was so easy to get around Strasbourg from this apartment!Beautiful room in a beautiful city – Dianne from United Kingdom – 4 February 2025 (10/10)
Property perfectly positioned to get around, very secure building with all the amenities you need to come back to at the end of the day.
Lovely, well-equipped apartment full of character, with wonderful views. – Eleanor from United Kingdom – 20 January 2025 (10/10)
Location was absolutely great, just by a big tram intersection and a short walk from the Cathedral. The views from the windows were lovely – sun setting behind the Cathedral spire.
What could be improved: Not suitable for anyone who can't do stairs as there is quite a climb to the flat.Superb – Denise from Australia – 5 June 2024 (9/10)
This accommodation is extremely well-located for a visit to Strasbourg and we easily walked to all the places we wanted to visit. Although small, we had everything we needed for our stay including a washing machine. It is an extremely cosy apartment and, as it is in a corner of the building, there are fantastic views in two directions.
What could be improved: Be prepared to carry your luggage a long way as there are a lot of steps – the apartment is at the top of the building! I was lucky in that our host helped me up with my luggage.Superb – Dovile from Lithuania – 8 March 2024 (9/10)
Extremely nice, cosy place to stay, feels like home. Very caring host. You will find everything you need for short or longer stay.
What could be improved: small bathtub in the kitchen area10/10 recommended – Pelin from Turkey – 15 February 2024 (10/10)
The property was very well decorated. Loved the interior design. Before seeing it in person I thought it could’ve been a bit small, but it was more than comfortable enough for two. It was in the center of everything, so we didn’t needed to use any public transportation throughout our visit. You have everything you need in the kitchen to cook. The owner was also really nice and picked us up from the bus station 🙂
What could be improved: The toilet and the bathroom was a bit unusual but everything was clean and tidy, that’s why it didn’t bother us at all.Ideal place to stay especially if travelling light – David from Australia – 29 December 2023 (10/10)
Location was excellent close to sights and supermarket as well as public transport
Appointments in the apartment were good
View from the apartment was also good
Host was very helpful in assisting with cases up the 3 floors of spiral staircase
What could be improved: Only down side was the 71 step spiral staircase but with planning it was only necessary to down and up once each dayThis apartment is cozy, clean, very good located and perfect equipped. It’s a great little love nest, sweetly and lovingly done up.

Very original and fitting for a lovely weekend in Strasbourg
