Hotel Description

You know what? I almost walked right past La Chaumière on my first try finding it – the entrance is sort of tucked away on this quiet little street called Ail, which honestly makes it feel more like you’re staying at someone’s well-appointed home than a hotel. And that’s actually the whole charm of this place. It’s got that boutique feel without trying too hard, if that makes sense. The lobby has this warm, lived-in elegance – not the sterile marble-and-chrome thing you get at chain hotels, but more like your sophisticated aunt’s sitting room with really good taste in furniture.

The location is what really sold me though. I mean, you’re literally a five-minute walk from the cathedral – you can actually hear the bells from some of the upper floor rooms, which sounds annoying but is surprisingly pleasant. More importantly for me, you’re right in the thick of Petite France without being stuck in the tourist chaos. There’s this fantastic little boulangerie just around the corner that the locals line up at every morning (get there before 8 AM or forget about croissants), and honestly, being able to grab proper pastries and coffee within two minutes of rolling out of bed made my whole stay better. The staff actually knows the neighborhood too – the woman at reception gave me this perfect dinner recommendation at a tiny winstub that I never would have found otherwise, tucked away on some side street near the river.

What impressed me most was how they handle the small stuff that bigger hotels mess up. Check-in was genuinely smooth – no standing around for twenty minutes while they find your reservation. The rooms are on the smaller side, which you’d expect in the old part of Strasbourg, but they’ve maximized the space really cleverly. Good lighting for actually reading, outlets where you need them, and the bathroom has one of those rainfall showers that actually works properly. I stayed in October when it was getting chilly, and the heating was spot-on – not too much, not too little. Parking is… well, it’s Strasbourg’s old town, so street parking is a nightmare, but they can arrange garage spots nearby for a reasonable fee. The 8.5 rating makes total sense to me – it’s not trying to be a luxury palace, but everything they do, they do really well. If you want to feel like you’re staying somewhere with character while still having modern conveniences and a staff that actually cares, this is your spot.

How close in town to everything we wanted to see. Was easy to find and loved the charm of the place.

What could be improved: Would have been nice to have shower gel for the bathroom but we just got our own.

  • It was a pleasure to stay in such an historic and well presented property. Location was perfect right in the middle of t – Toby from United Kingdom – 31 July 2024 (8/10)

    Beautiful apartment in top location.

What could be improved: Only one fan between three bedrooms was not sufficient in the weather we enjoyed.

  • Beautiful quiet location – Eilidh from United Kingdom – 5 July 2024 (10/10)

Amazing location! Perfect walking distance to so many attractions. Very quiet overnight despite being so central. Amazing to hear all of the church bells every day. Very well stocked. TV is useful. Gorgeous style of old building. We are a tall family so occasionally bumped our heads but it was worth it for the gorgeous stay!

  • Great location and great decoration. – Patrick from Canada – 16 April 2024 (9/10)

Great location and great decoration. You feel the history of the city in this place. It's 3 floors with beds. The communication with the owner was fast.

  • Simply wonderful and relaxing. – John from Australia – 26 December 2023 (10/10)

Nicholas and Catherine were so accommodating, communication and the apartment were both excellent.
Such a lovely place to stay in Strasbourg and very central to everything. My wife and I, with our four adult children had more than enough space to relax and interact. I would book again in a heart beat. We were truely grateful for our time (4days) here.

What could be improved: Not a thing

  • A beautiful time in Strasbourg in the perfect location for a family of six! – Sébastien from France – 10 August 2023 (10/10)

    Its location and its host.

What could be improved: Nothing to say here!

  • Exactly as advertised, no frills and rustic charm – Katherine from United States – 20 June 2023 (8/10)

it was exactly as described. we enjoyed staying in a historic, residential building. though central it was delightfully quiet. access was easy per instructions received. having the laundry machine and drying racks was wonderful. The host was very responsive when I asked a question. We stayed during very hot days and as a result slept only on the lowest floor, which was fine for us. We used the oscillating fan to stay cool. Note: If arriving by train, take the tram to the stop closest to the apartment to avoid dragging suitcases over cobblestones for 15-minutes.

What could be improved: The apartment was exactly as described but my family found it to be at the edge of our comfort level of rusticity. At 5’10”, I hit my head on thresholds and low beams many times. I found the ladder-like stairs to be unwieldy. You need to be spry for this place!

  • Perfect for a short family stay in Strasbourg – Stefent from Greece – 20 April 2023 (8/10)

  • Good – John from United Kingdom – 23 April 2025 (7/10)

    Location

What could be improved: Stairs to bedroom at the top of the apartment were a challenge.
