Hotel Description
You know what caught me off guard about Hôtel Graffalgar? The name made me expect some stuffy French place trying too hard to be British, but honestly, it’s just this really solid neighborhood hotel that happens to sit on one of Strasbourg’s quieter streets. And I mean quiet – rue Déserte literally translates to “deserted street,” which sounds ominous but actually means you’ll sleep like a baby even with the windows cracked open.
The thing is, this three-star spot punches way above its weight class. I’ve stayed at plenty of hotels with more stars that felt soulless, but there’s something genuine about Graffalgar that you pick up on right when you walk in. Maybe it’s because the staff actually seems to care about whether you find that little boulangerie around the corner (it’s incredible, by the way – grab the pain aux raisins before 10 AM or you’re out of luck). The location is honestly perfect if you want to feel like you’re staying in actual Strasbourg rather than tourist-land. You’re close enough to walk to the cathedral in about fifteen minutes, but far enough from the crowds that you can duck back for an afternoon nap without fighting through selfie sticks.
What really sold me was the attention to small stuff that matters when you’re actually living somewhere for a few days. The Wi-Fi works properly – and I mean throughout the building, not just if you’re standing next to the router. There’s decent water pressure, which you don’t appreciate until you’ve spent a week somewhere with that sad European trickle shower situation. The rooms aren’t huge, but they’re thoughtfully laid out so your suitcase isn’t blocking the bathroom door. And here’s something you won’t read in other reviews – the walls are thick enough that you won’t hear your neighbors’ entire phone conversations. Trust me, after staying in some paper-thin places near the train station, this matters more than fancy marble countertops.
The neighborhood itself is what locals call “authentique” without being run-down. You’ve got that corner café where the same regulars show up every morning, a little épicerie that stays open late when you need toothpaste or wine, and tree-lined streets that feel properly European without being precious about it. Parking can be tricky (it’s street parking mostly), but the tram stop at Place de Bordeaux is close enough that you can ditch the car and just use public transport to get around the city center.
Look, an 8.4 rating might not sound earth-shattering, but it reflects something real – this is a place that does the fundamentals really well without trying to be something it’s not. The breakfast is solid, the beds are comfortable, and when you ask for restaurant recommendations, they send you to places where they actually eat, not tourist traps. Sometimes that’s exactly what you want, especially in a city like Strasbourg where the real charm is in wandering the neighborhoods and stumbling onto your own discoveries.

It is near Strasbourg main station. The artworks in the hotel is amazing. The attending staff is so good that he agreed to keep my luggage until the next day since the hotel is fully booked so I need to transfer to another property.
