Hotel Description
Look, I’ll be honest – when I first walked down rue des Bateliers looking for Hôtel De L’Ill, I almost missed it. It’s tucked into this quiet side street that runs parallel to the Ill River (hence the name, obviously), and from the outside it looks like just another traditional Alsatian building with those classic timber frames. But you know what? That’s actually part of its charm. While everyone’s fighting for rooms at the big chains near the cathedral or getting gouged at those boutique places in Petite France, this little three-star gem sits quietly doing its thing just a five-minute walk from all the action.
The thing about this place is that it gets the basics really right, which honestly matters more than fancy amenities when you’re dealing with Strasbourg’s narrow medieval streets and limited parking. The staff – and I mean this – actually seem to care about helping you navigate the city. They’ll tell you which tram stops to use (the Langstross-Grand’Rue stop is your friend), where to grab decent coffee that isn’t touristy garbage, and most importantly, they’ll explain Strasbourg’s bizarre parking situation before you end up with a ticket. The rooms aren’t going to win any design awards, but they’re clean and quiet – surprisingly quiet, actually, considering you’re basically in the city center. I stayed in one facing the courtyard and barely heard any street noise, which is pretty remarkable for this part of town.
What really sold me on this place, though, is the location without the location tax, if that makes sense. You’re literally a ten-minute walk to the cathedral, but you’re not paying cathedral-adjacent prices. Plus – and locals will appreciate this – you’re right by some of the better winstubs that tourists haven’t completely discovered yet. There’s this little Alsatian place around the corner that serves proper choucroute, and you can actually get a table without booking three days ahead. The breakfast at the hotel is solid too – nothing fancy, but real croissants and decent coffee, which is all you need before wandering around those cobblestone streets all day. I mean, the 8.4 rating isn’t an accident here. It’s the kind of place that does what it promises without any pretense, and in a city where you can easily drop serious money on accommodation, that’s actually pretty refreshing.

Reviews
Ok hotel, friendly, great location – Christopher from Australia – 16 July 2025 (7/10)
The Location, breakfast was Not Bad, staff member was very helpful after alerted to our initial problem
What could be improved: Initial room far too small for 2 people, shutters could not be opened and room was too hot the first night. Also our room key repeatedly wasn’t working. Alerted staff member who gave us a bigger, albeit less modern room with windows that let in light and air and stay was much improved.
On a different note: it remains unclear why this hotel offers cooked breakfast options which are left to go cold.Great little hotel – Graham from United Kingdom – 3 July 2025 (9/10)
Small, but big enough. Very friendly staff, and good breakfast. Nice and quiet, but in a great location, just over the furniture from the old town. Would highly recommend.
What could be improved: Room could be a bit bigger, but it was great value for money.Great location and attentive staff – Debbie from Australia – 22 June 2025 (8/10)

What could be improved: Dogs running up and down the corridor after 11pm till midnightClose to everything ! – Anders from Sweden – 18 June 2025 (9/10)
Lage Lage Lage ! You cannot get a better location; location meaning geographical : 30s to L'Ille !
What could be improved: The cover photo shows a famous house in Petite France, not the Hotel. That dissapointed and confused us a bit. not amused. And : you are paying fir the location so close to all the nice spots, not for s nice modern room and not for a good breakfast, but it is ok.Nice stay! – Nicole from Germany – 7 June 2025 (8/10)
