Hotel Description

Look, I’ve stayed at plenty of three-star places in European city centers, and honestly, most of them feel like afterthoughts—you know, cramped rooms above noisy streets with that weird carpet smell. But Cigogne Dorée actually gets it right, and I mean really right. The moment you walk through that entrance on Place Saint-Thomas, you can tell someone here understands what travelers actually want. It’s tucked right into this gorgeous little square that most tourists rush past on their way to the cathedral (which is literally a five-minute walk, by the way), but locals know this spot—there’s this excellent boulangerie on the corner where you’ll see the same faces every morning grabbing their pain au chocolat.

The hotel itself feels like someone’s stylish aunt decided to open her Strasbourg townhouse to guests. I mean that in the best way possible. The rooms aren’t huge—this is historic center France, after all—but they’re thoughtfully laid out with these lovely details that make you want to linger. The windows actually open (thank god), and if you get one facing the square, you’ll hear the church bells from Saint-Thomas, which sounds romantic until 7 AM, but honestly, it’s kind of charming once you adjust. What really impressed me was how quiet it gets at night despite being so central. You’re literally steps from Rue des Serruriers with all its restaurants, but somehow the building blocks out most of the evening chatter. The staff—and this matters more than people realize—actually seem to enjoy working there. The woman at reception remembered I was meeting friends at Maison Kammerzell and suggested the less touristy route through the old tanners’ quarter.

Here’s what you should know practically speaking: parking is tricky (it’s Strasbourg’s old town, what do you expect?), but there’s a decent public garage about three blocks away, and honestly, you won’t need your car once you’re settled. The breakfast spread is solid—proper local stuff, not just generic hotel pastries—and they serve it until 10:30, which is civilized. During summer, the square gets lively with people spilling out from the wine bar across the way, but it dies down by 11 PM. Winter’s actually lovely here because the Christmas market crowds stick to the main drags, so you get this cozy, local feeling in the evenings. That 9-point rating makes sense when you add it all up—it’s not luxury, but it’s the kind of place that makes you feel like you’ve discovered something special rather than just booked a room. You’ll walk out knowing a little corner of Strasbourg that feels authentically yours.

Reviews

  • Good place to stay – Karen from Switzerland – 28 May 2025 (9/10)

Central location. Great information from hosts about checking in and pictures too! Really friendly messages. Beds great. Nice little balcony. Towels great. Loads of power points for chargers much appreciated. Kitchen seems very well stocked although we didn’t cook there.

What could be improved: Wifi wasn’t working but we were hardly in the apartment so it didn’t honestly bother us. For tall people the low doorways might be a challenge but they are all well marked and not a mark on us. ..

  • Pleasant – Anchalee from Thailand – 1 June 2025 (6/10)

The location is super convenient. Easily walk to Petit France and the Cathedral.

What could be improved: Steep stairs to the 3rd floor. The balcony is tiny and facing into the common area of the building which is the back side of an indian restaurant. Curry smell at the hallway.
For me, the pictures of the room are a bit overrated. And I'd be appreciated if you can include the door picture before reaching the stairway into your check-in instructions.

  • Estancia perfecta – Germandeza from Spain – 26 May 2025 (8/10)

No cambiaría nada.

What could be improved: Los techos son bastante bajos, si eres una persona alta igual estás un poco incómodo.

  • Lumineux, parfait ! – Marie-claude from Canada – 10 May 2025 (10/10)

What could be improved: Rien. Mais il y a 3 étages à monter, c'est bon de le savoir.

  • Super zentral und sehr gemütlich – Anja-kristina from Germany – 14 April 2025 (10/10)

  • Superb – Gregory from France – 5 April 2025 (9/10)

    unkomplizierter Check-in,

  • Superb – Clem from France – 23 July 2025 (9/10)

  • Exceptional – Daniel from Austria – 21 July 2025 (10/10)
