Hotel Description
You know what caught me off guard about A L’ill? The name sounds fancy, but honestly, it’s just a really solid choice right in the thick of things on Quai des Bateliers. I mean, you’re literally on the waterfront looking at the Ill River – which, if you’ve never been to Strasbourg, is this lovely little waterway that wraps around the old town like a moat. The building itself has that typical Alsatian vibe without trying too hard, and when I first walked up, I was already mentally plotting my morning coffee runs to the little bakery I spotted just around the corner.
The studios and apartments here are what I’d call “actually functional” – you know how some places look great in photos but then you can’t figure out where to put your suitcase? Not the case here. The kitchenettes are small but they work (I made pasta twice, no complaints), and the bathrooms are modern enough that you don’t feel like you’re roughing it. What really sold me was stepping out onto Quai des Bateliers in the morning – there’s something about watching the joggers and dog walkers do their thing along the water while you’re sipping coffee that just feels… right. Plus, you’re maybe a seven-minute walk to Place Kléber, which means you can hit the Christmas markets in December without dealing with trams or buses. Speaking of trams, the nearest stop is close enough that you hear them occasionally, but it’s not that jarring screech-and-rumble that keeps you up at night.
Here’s the thing though – and this might matter depending on when you visit – the area gets pretty lively on weekend evenings. Not rowdy exactly, but Strasbourg’s old town has this way of coming alive after dark, especially when the weather’s nice and people are wandering between restaurants and bars. I actually loved it (felt like being part of the city instead of just visiting), but if you’re looking for complete silence, maybe pack earplugs. The 8.3 rating feels about right to me – it’s not trying to be the Ritz, but it nails the basics and the location is honestly hard to beat. You can walk to the cathedral in one direction, cross over to Petite France in another, and if you’re feeling ambitious, the European Parliament is just a tram ride away. Check-in was smooth, the staff spoke English well enough to handle my mediocre French, and I never had that sinking feeling of “what did I book myself into?” that sometimes happens with three-star places. If you want to feel like you’re actually staying in Strasbourg rather than just sleeping there, this works.

Excellent apartment in great location with lovely views – Emma from Australia – 25 July 2025 (8/10)
Great location and comfortable apartment
What could be improved: No air conGood and spacious apartment with a very nice host 🙂 – Yuliia from Czech Republic – 23 April 2025 (9/10)
Great apartment, 100% worth it's value. The host is very nice 🙂 The location is excellent, in the city centre but not the heart of the 'old town' so it didn't feel very busy and was surprisingly quiet.
Great view of the canal and church. And the inner garden is just wow.
What could be improved: The lock on the bathroom door didn't work.Excellent stay would come again. – Kylie from Australia – 17 December 2024 (9/10)
Loved the location, the size, the kitchen was well equipped, Simon was lovely, parking was available, really cozy apartment.
What could be improved: The sofa bed could be upgraded.Great location and nice place, parking a bit tricky – Yuko from Germany – 7 October 2024 (8/10)
Great location. We had a small apartment on the top floor and had a great view of the cathedral. Sofa bed was more comfortable as I imagined. Clean and small but enough space for two of us..
What could be improved: Apartment was great. But the parking was a bit tricky. We reserved a parking spot with additional 20 euro. So we were trying to reach the apartment obviously by a car. But we saw that the apartment is on the pedestrian zone and blocked for cars! After meeting the lady from the apartment, we learned that we just need to drive into the pedestrian road to reach the parking spot! Driving by cafés and bikers and pedestrian and "do not enter" sign was for sure an experience we did not expect! After all, it was all fine but would have been good to be informed about the situation ahead of time.Great location for a stop over in Strasbourg – Carol from United Kingdom – 28 September 2024 (8/10)
It was clean and well located for a one-night stay. The concierge was very efficient. We’d agreed a time to meet but arrived earlier than expected. We phoned and she came straight away to meet us.
What could be improved: Everything was fine for a one night stayVery good – Mohammed from Oman – 23 August 2024 (8/10)
Everything and the parking
What could be improved: NothingVery good – Kayleigh from Germany – 14 August 2024 (8/10)
Very convenient and clean. The host was very helpful and pleasant. All the amenities you need for great stay.
What could be improved: Unfortunately, and completely out of the host control, there were some extremely loud and obnoxious people who continued to talk and yell at each other throughout the entire night on the street below. It made for a restless night.Flat with a view – Ebba from Luxembourg – 22 May 2024 (8/10)
Very central location with restaurants and shops all at walking distance. View of the old city and the cathedral. Good bedrooms and kitchen. Everything clean and correct.
What could be improved: The entrance to the building is a bit dark.An excellent and memorable stay – Courtney from United Kingdom – 22 April 2024 (9/10)
This was a lovely and well equipped studio with amazingly beautiful views of the city, including the Cathedral and Ill river. Lovely and thoughtful extras such as a nespresso machine. It was generally comfortable. The staff were exceptional: very friendly and accommodating, and after I mistakenly left my laptop in the flat they did everything they could to return it to me by post quickly and safely. A wonderful company and an excellent stay: highly recommended.
What could be improved: The pull out couch had a mattress that wasn’t as comfortable as a normal bed. Perhaps think about replacing this in top floor studio. Also, there was no frying pan in the otherwise well equipped kitchen.Ecerything was perfect, the sofabed a total no go – Simone from Luxembourg – 5 April 2024 (8/10)
What could be improved: It was a sofabed to sleep, terrible, no quality
