You know what caught me off guard about Quatre Chaises? The name literally means “four chairs” in French, and I kept wondering if there was some story behind it – though honestly, I never got around to asking. What I did discover is that this little 4-star gem sits right in the heart of Strasbourg’s pedestrian zone on Rue des Grandes Arcades, which means you’re basically living inside a postcard of half-timbered Alsatian buildings.

The location is actually perfect if you want to feel like a local rather than a tourist. I mean, you’re a two-minute walk from the cathedral (and trust me, you’ll hear those bells), but you’re also right where Strasbourgeois actually shop and grab coffee. The street itself is one of those covered arcade situations – super handy when it’s drizzling, which happens more often than you’d think in this part of France. Parking is… well, it’s the old town, so forget about street parking. There’s a public garage nearby, but honestly, once you’re settled in, you won’t need a car anyway.

The rooms have this understated elegance that feels authentically French without trying too hard. None of that fake château nonsense – just clean lines, good lighting, and beds that don’t make you miss your own too much. The bathrooms are properly sized (not those airplane-style closets you sometimes get in European hotels), and the water pressure is solid. I stayed during late spring when the windows were open, and you get this lovely mix of sounds – people chatting as they walk by, the occasional tram in the distance, but nothing that kept me awake. The staff actually knows the neighborhood, which sounds basic but you’d be surprised how rare that is. They pointed me toward this tiny winstub around the corner that I never would have found on my own, and it ended up being one of my best meals in the city.

What really sold me on the place is how it strikes that balance between being comfortable and feeling connected to where you are. You’re not in some international hotel bubble – step outside and you’re immediately in the flow of Strasbourg life. The Grande Île (that’s the historic center) is small enough that everything feels walkable, but Quatre Chaises puts you right in the sweet spot where you can easily wander to Place Kléber for shopping, duck into Petite France for the tourist photos, or just follow the smell of pretzels and choucroute to whatever bistro calls to you. With an 8.8 rating, clearly other people are picking up on the same vibe – it’s the kind of place that just works without making a big show of itself.

  Had everything we needed in the kitchen and with the laundry, good location
  Always nice with my son and I can have separate rooms and if there’s a bathtub and the toilet is separate that is icing on the cake so I can take a bath and read a book

  Fabulous location and lots of little details to make the stay special. Everything you could need for was supplied. Lovely decor and comfy beds and lots of hot water for showers.

  What could be improved: Front bedroom is noisy at night being in a central location. There is an elevator but sometimes didn’t work. Multiple steep stairs, difficult if a person has mobility issues.

  This is a very nice apartment with everything you need included. Very clean and well appointed. Such a wonderful location for the Christmas markets, grocery close by, pharmacy just a few steps from the front door, fabulous food up and down the street. We wish we were staying longer!
  
  What could be improved: Everything was great. The bathroom sink does have a bit of spray so your shirt will get wet. Other than that, this is a wonderful place to stay. Quiet in the building, but centrally located.
