Hotel Description

Honestly, L’EUROPEEN caught me off guard in the best way possible. I mean, you see the name and think it’s going to be some stuffy institutional place – and yeah, it’s literally named after being near the European institutions – but walking into the lobby, there’s this understated elegance that feels more Parisian boutique than government district hotel. The Boulevard Jacques Preiss location is actually perfect if you know Strasbourg at all; you’re close enough to the European Quarter that you can walk to the Parliament building in maybe ten minutes, but far enough from the tourist crush around the cathedral that you get a real sense of how locals live.

What really struck me was how the staff seemed to genuinely care about getting things right. Check-in was smooth – no pretentious flourishes, just efficient and friendly in that particular French way where they’re helpful without being overly chatty. The rooms have this clean, minimalist vibe that works really well; nothing flashy, but the beds are seriously comfortable and everything feels freshly updated. You know what I appreciated? The soundproofing is actually decent, which matters on Jacques Preiss since it can get busy during the day with European Parliament sessions. I stayed during one of those periods when all the MEPs were in town, and while the area was buzzing, nights were surprisingly quiet.

The neighborhood itself is where this place really shines though. You’re a quick tram ride from Petite France and the historic center, but honestly, I found myself just wandering the streets around the hotel more than I expected. There’s this great little boulangerie two blocks down that locals line up at every morning, and the Parc de l’Orangerie is close enough for an easy morning jog if that’s your thing. Parking can be a bit of a puzzle – typical Strasbourg, really – but the hotel staff knew exactly where to direct me to the nearest public garage. For a three-star place, L’EUROPEEN punches above its weight in terms of location knowledge and local connections. It’s not trying to be the fanciest hotel in the city, but it absolutely nails being the kind of place where you feel like you’re staying somewhere that understands both its international guests and its very French surroundings. That 8.1 rating makes total sense once you’ve been there.

Reviews

  • Good – Niovi from Greece – 5 October 2024 (7/10)

Close to the Council of Europe

What could be improved: The check in and check out dates are very restrictive. Checking in between 5-9 in the evening is not very helpful and having to notify in advance about that does not give flexibility. The check out time is also very early. As for the facilities, we thought that essentially it is an room, with a corridor and bathroom. Various rooms were locked. This makes the space not value for money.

  • Exceptional – Klara from Belgium – 10 October 2024 (10/10)

Location was amazing! It's a 10min walk to the Parliament

  • Avoid this place and go to a proper hotel – Simonida from Netherlands – 27 March 2024 (3/10)

Location close to European Parliament was the reason I booked this, as the hotel I usually stay for work in Strasbourg was not available. It is an apartment where I had one bedroom and the bathroom and kitchenette all to myself as no one else was staying those 3 nights. The bedroom and bathroom were excellent, the kitchen less so, although it has a microwave, small fridge and a coffee maker that is neither Nespresso nor Dolce Gusto – not sure if it worked properly, I made instant coffee instead. Elaborate check-in instructions were sent to me 1 day before arrival, neither lockbox nor code, but entered easily.

What could be improved: The host knew I was arriving late, when there is literally nothing open in Strasbourg, and yet all she left me in the fridge was a small bottle of water. After travelling for 12 hours that day, I had to take a taxi to a shop open till 22 hours to buy drinks and food. There are only tiny glasses in the kitchen, very old mugs, no plates or a full set of cutlery. (No forks, if I remember well, but not sure). The host sounded nice when she called on the phone that first night and wanted to come over "to explain to me the workings of the lock" when I was already in pyjamas, although instructions for the automatic lock glued to the door in English and French were perfectly clear. Her insistence sounded strange, but I did not give it any more thought at the time. I used the automatic lock to let myself out on departure and left the keys by the door as instructed. A week later I received through booking.com the host's claim that I owe her €60 for "damaging the lock". I don't know what to think of this, as that lock cannot be damaged without some serious tools. All in all, there was no hospitality or comfort involved.

  • Alloggio comodo e accogliente – Elettra from Italy – 10 December 2023 (9/10)

What could be improved: Il prezzo è davvero molto alto, almeno nel periodo dei mercatini di Natale.
