Hotel Description

Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first walked up to Les Appartements de l’Epine – the building looks pretty unassuming from Rue de l’Epine, tucked between those typical Strasbourg townhouses with their neat shutters. But you know what? Sometimes the best places are the ones that don’t need to show off from the street.

The thing that really got me about this place is how it feels more like borrowing a friend’s apartment than staying at a hotel. I mean, you’ve got proper kitchenettes (not those sad little coffee stations), and the rooms are actually spacious enough to spread out your stuff without living out of a suitcase. The owner – super friendly guy, speaks decent English if your French is rusty – clearly put thought into the details. Like, there are actual wine glasses, not plastic cups, and the shower pressure is surprisingly good for an older building. The WiFi actually works too, which honestly can be hit or miss in this part of the old town.

What I love about the location is that you’re right in the thick of things without being on one of those tourist-packed streets where you can’t sleep past 7 AM. Rue de l’Epine is quiet enough that you’ll hear church bells instead of drunk tourists, but you’re literally a five-minute walk to Place Kléber and maybe eight minutes to the cathedral. The Saturday market at Place du Marché aux Poissons is just around the corner – I grabbed the most incredible pain aux raisins there every morning. And here’s something the guidebooks won’t tell you: there’s this little Alsatian wine bar called Le Gruber just two streets over that locals actually go to. None of that touristy flammekueche theater, just really good regional wines and proper choucroute.

The building itself has that solid, old-world feel – thick walls that keep things cool in summer, though the stairs are a bit narrow if you’re hauling big suitcases (no elevator, but honestly, it’s only three floors). Parking can be tricky since it’s right in the pedestrian zone, but there’s a public garage about a block away, and they’ll give you directions that actually make sense. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward too – none of that endless paperwork some places put you through.

I stayed in October, which turned out to be perfect timing. The summer crowds were gone, but the weather was still decent for wandering around. The Christmas market chaos hadn’t started yet either, so you could actually enjoy the old town without getting swept along in tourist rivers. Would I stay here again? Absolutely. It’s got that sweet spot thing going – comfortable enough that you want to come back to your room, but not so fancy that you feel like you should be spending all your time there instead of exploring Strasbourg.

Reviews

  • Exceptional – Mathias from Germany – 26 March 2025 (10/10)

Very cozy apartment at the heart of the city and still calm at night. Very friendly hosts.

  • Lovely location but difficult check in. – Gemma from Australia – 6 January 2025 (8/10)

The apartment was so cute, and the location was fantastic!

What could be improved: The check in process was extremely stressful, the owner did not send any instructions and despite calling and messaging, the owner answered but did not provide any information. Only when we arrived at the door and called the owner on WhatsApp video and repeatedly asked to show us how to get in, he sent his son over to let us in.

  • Exceptional – Boryana from Bulgaria – 12 December 2024 (10/10)

Excellent location, 5 min from cathedral and all
major sights. Quiet and safe street.

  • Great location and facilities – Patyahgirl from Australia – 4 November 2024 (9/10)

A wonderful city to explore, this apartment was in the middle of all the sights…. we walked easily from the train station (cobblestones make it interesting) to the accomm. Everything you could need was provided – even a portable fan/cooler for the days that were hot.

What could be improved: Very tiny toilet, we just didn't close the door so we didn't feel so closed in.

  • Don't Miss This One – Paula from United Kingdom – 30 September 2024 (10/10)

Super location in the centre of Strasbourg. Quiet and calm even though the area was very busy. Lovely clean apartment cleverly modernised in an old building. Very comfortable, warm, plenty of hot water, good shower. Kitchen well equipped. Communication with owner was good.

What could be improved: Apartment is easily visible from the other apartments which face the inner courtyard, so we kept the curtains closed during the day.

  • Great value and location – Peter from United States – 29 June 2024 (10/10)

Great location. So central and very quiet given location.

What could be improved: It’s small, but has all you need and location is great.

  • Very enjoyable – Giustino from Canada – 3 December 2023 (10/10)
