The building itself feels like it grew out of Strasbourg‘s historic fabric — honestly, you could walk past it twice before realizing it’s actually a hotel rather than some perfectly preserved merchant’s house. The entrance is understated in that distinctly French way, where elegance doesn’t need to shout about itself.

I mean, you really can’t get more central than Quai Saint-Nicolas without literally sleeping in the cathedral. The location is genuinely exceptional — you’re a three-minute walk from Petite France (those postcard-perfect half-timbered houses everyone comes to see), and the Christmas markets practically happen on your doorstep during winter. What I love is that you can actually hear the Ill River flowing right outside, which gives you this sense of being in old Strasbourg rather than just visiting it. The tram stops are close enough to be useful but far enough that you won’t hear them rumbling past your window.

The Room Experience

The rooms here strike this nice balance between historic charm and modern comfort — you know what I mean, where you get the character without the creaky floors and questionable plumbing. My room had these lovely views over the quay, and honestly, watching people stroll along the waterfront in the evening became part of the daily routine. The bathrooms are compact but well-designed (this is France, after all), and the beds are genuinely comfortable. You’ll find thoughtful touches like good reading lights and enough outlets for your devices, which sounds basic but you’d be surprised how many boutique hotels miss these details.

While Le Saint Nicolas doesn’t have its own restaurant, this actually works in your favor because you’re surrounded by some of Strasbourg’s best dining options. The hotel staff — who are refreshingly knowledgeable about the area — pointed me toward this incredible winstub just around the corner where locals actually eat. You’re also steps away from the covered markets, so grabbing fresh pastries or local specialties for a riverside picnic becomes effortless. The breakfast situation is handled well enough, though I found myself drawn to the nearby cafés for that proper French morning coffee ritual.

There’s something about Le Saint Nicolas that just gets Strasbourg right — it doesn’t try to be flashy or over-the-top, but instead focuses on being exactly where you want to be and providing exactly what you need.   The location of the property was fantastic for visiting the Christmas markets but also for exploring the city. The apartment’s furnishings were beautiful and it was great for 2 couples and a kid.

  This is a large, beautifully appointed and interesting apartment in a fantastic location, we would certainly book again. The Christmas markets are all within walking distance, and some of the most charming are just a few minutes away. It's a very short walk to the Cathedral. The cinema projection system is an excellent touch. Three large and beautiful windows give views of the lively street, river and bridge right outside. The host company was readily on hand to assist.
  
  What could be improved: Overall the beds and bedding were just OK. The beds were double but relatively small and low. The pillows were thin and the duvet was narrow. There is only one toilet, not ensuite.
