Hotel Description
Look, I’ll be honest – when I first walked up to Le Batelier on Quai des Bateliers, I wasn’t expecting much from a 3-star place. But you know what? Sometimes the best surprises come in modest packages, especially when you’re literally staring up at Strasbourg Cathedral from your window. I mean, we’re talking about one of the most stunning Gothic masterpieces in Europe, and you can watch the light hit those intricate spires while you’re having your morning coffee. The location is actually pretty incredible – you’re right in the heart of the old town on this charming quay that follows the Ill River, and honestly, you can’t get more central than this without sleeping in the cathedral itself.
The thing about staying right in Strasbourg’s hyper-centre (and yes, they really do call it that) is that you’re walking distance from everything that matters. La Petite France is maybe a ten-minute stroll along the water, and the Christmas markets – if you’re lucky enough to be there in December – are practically at your doorstep. What I really appreciated was how the hotel sits on this quieter stretch of the quai, so you’re not dealing with the tourist chaos of Place Kléber, but you can still hear the gentle sounds of the river and the occasional tram rumbling by on Rue du 22 Novembre. The building itself has that classic Alsatian charm you’d expect, though I’ll admit the interiors are more functional than fancy – this isn’t a luxury property, and the 7.8 rating reflects that it’s solid without being spectacular.
But here’s the thing about Le Batelier – it gets the fundamentals right. The rooms are clean and comfortable (though some of the bathrooms could use updating, if I’m being completely honest), and the staff actually seems to care about helping you navigate the city. They gave me great recommendations for winstubs that weren’t just tourist traps, and when I needed to figure out parking – because driving in old Strasbourg is basically a nightmare – they pointed me toward the Austerlitz garage nearby. What really won me over was waking up to that cathedral view and realizing I could walk to Maison Kammerzell for dinner, pop over to the Palais Rohan if I wanted some culture, or just wander the cobblestone streets without any real agenda. Sure, you might find fancier places in the Neustadt district, but then you’d miss out on falling asleep to the sound of the cathedral bells and being able to grab fresh pretzels from the morning market before most tourists even wake up.

WHAT A VIEW, but TOO MANY STAIRS – Carolyn from Australia – 21 June 2025 (8/10)
Perfect Location, in the city amongst everything. We loved it.
What could be improved: Many, many, many stairs. The coded key lock was awful and tried a few times to open.Good – Germanov from Bulgaria – 20 December 2024 (7/10)
Very good location, warm and quiet appartment
What could be improved: The bed and pillows. 4th floor without lift is a bit challenging.Absolutely amazing! – Abbi from United States – 17 October 2024 (9/10)
We had the most incredible stay!! The location was superb, the hosts were also superb!! Any question I had was answered within a timely manner – this is definitely the best spot to stay in Strasbourg
What could be improved: Our only complaint was the mattress in the bedroom…Exceptional – Viktorija from Lithuania – 23 January 2025 (10/10)
Excellent central location, with a nice view of the river and the cathedral tower. Very calm inside. Comfortable layout and pleasant decoration. Very easy self check-in and check-out. Smooth communication with the host.
What could be improved: The shower head should be changed, as the water leaks through its sides.
Also, the shower head holder should be attached higher up to be able to have a proper shower, as now it is hung very low.
The kitchen ventilation is an open hole, blowing out air with a hissing noise – the hole should be covered.
Otherwise, once these corrections are implemented, the flat is very comfortable and I would gladly come back again! The best of Strasburg – Blackwell from United States – 4 January 2024 (10/10)
Location, incredible view, old beautiful building
An exceptionally lovely apartment in an excellent location. – Deirdre from Ireland – 30 November 2023 (10/10)
Fantastic location, 5 minutes walk from the cathedral. Very safe area. Apartment bright and spacious, very comfortable and clean. Very responsive staff. Lovely experience overall.
What could be improved: The only two aspects were. Firstly, it was on 4th floor with step stairs. This however afforded beautiful views of the river abs historic centre of Strasbourg. Secondly, the shower hose was not attached to the wall so had to be held during showering which was a little awkward.Excellent Location! True experience of Strasbourg – Ticannon from United States – 22 July 2023 (10/10)
If you want a true feel of Strasbourg, then this where you should stay. It is an old building, but a very comfortable apartment for one person or a couple. The location is superb. Directly across the water is the Cathédrale Notre-Dame-de-Strasbourg. The large front windows allow you to have beautiful view. Open up the bedroom windows and you have a comfortable flow of air through the apartment. Internet connection was excellent.
Again the location is great, within steps to the city center and cathedral, and very close to the Tram line.Perfect location – Nisan from Germany – 12 June 2023 (10/10)
The apartment was very clean and had everything we needed. Check in was fast and easy. The location is the best, amazing views.
