Hotel Description
Look, I’ll be honest – when I first walked up to La Madeleine on Rue Sainte-Madeleine, I wasn’t expecting much from a 3-star place. But you know what? Sometimes those modest expectations work in your favor. This little hotel actually surprised me, and I mean that in the best way possible.
The thing about staying here is the location – and I don’t mean that in some generic “convenient location” BS way that every hotel claims. I mean you’re literally a five-minute walk from the cathedral, tucked away on this quiet side street that most tourists completely miss. You can actually hear the cathedral bells from some of the rooms (which is either charming or annoying at 7 AM, depending on your perspective). The street itself is narrow and cobblestoned, so don’t expect to pull right up to the entrance – you’ll probably end up parking in one of those underground lots nearby and wheeling your suitcase over some seriously uneven stones. Fair warning there.
What I really appreciated was how the staff seemed to actually know Strasbourg, not just the hotel. The guy at reception – I think his name was Philippe – gave me directions to this little bakery around the corner that honestly had better croissants than the hotel breakfast. Speaking of breakfast, it’s pretty standard continental fare, nothing fancy, but the coffee was surprisingly good and they had local Alsatian jams that you won’t find everywhere. The rooms themselves are… well, they’re what you’d expect from a solid 3-star. Clean, comfortable enough, though the walls are a bit thin – I could hear my neighbors’ TV one night, but it wasn’t terrible. The bathroom in my room was recently renovated (you can tell because the fixtures actually matched), and the shower had decent water pressure, which honestly matters more than people realize after a long day walking around the old town.
Here’s the thing about La Madeleine – it’s not trying to be something it isn’t. The 7.9 rating makes perfect sense because it delivers exactly what it promises without any pretense. The lobby has this slightly worn but welcoming feel, like staying at a well-maintained family home rather than some sterile chain hotel. There’s free WiFi that actually works throughout the building (tested it in the stairwell because I’m weird like that), and they’ll hold your luggage if you arrive early, which saved my bacon since I got there around 10 AM on a Sunday. If you’re the type who needs a fitness center or room service, this isn’t your place. But if you want somewhere clean and comfortable to crash after exploring Petite France or the Christmas markets (if you’re there in December – and trust me, you want to be), then La Madeleine does the job really well. Plus, you’re close enough to everything that matters that you won’t be spending half your day figuring out transportation or walking until your feet hurt.

Superb – Edith from Germany – 26 April 2025 (9/10)

What could be improved:
Sehr empfehlenswert!
– Marc from Germany – 12 September 2023 (9/10)
Gerne Wieder!
What could be improved: Wir haben den Eingang zum Apartment im Haus erst nach einigem Suchen gefunden – ein entsprechender Hinweis auf der Tür, bzw. am Klingelschild wäre empfehlenswert. – Jagendorst from Netherlands – 9 August 2023 (8/10)

Appartamento centralissimo e comodo a tutto – Gian from Italy – 26 August 2024 (9/10)
Location tranquilla e silenziosa.
