Hotel Description

You know what struck me first about Hôtel le Grillon? It’s tucked away on this quiet little street called rue Thiergarten – and I mean quiet in the best way possible. You’re literally a three-minute walk from the chaos around the cathedral, but somehow you’ve landed in this peaceful pocket where the only sounds are locals heading to work in the morning and the occasional tram rumbling by in the distance.

The hotel itself has that classic Alsatian charm without trying too hard, if that makes sense. It’s a solid 3-star that actually feels like it deserves its 8.4 rating – honestly, I’ve stayed in fancier places that left me more frustrated. The rooms aren’t huge (this is Strasbourg’s historic center, after all), but they’re thoughtfully laid out with these lovely wooden touches that remind you you’re in Alsace. The staff genuinely seems to care about getting you sorted, which is refreshing. I remember the woman at reception drawing little arrows on my map to show me the best route to Petite France that avoids the tourist crowds – that kind of local insight you can’t Google.

What I really appreciated was how it sits perfectly between the old town bustle and actual neighborhood life. Walk five minutes toward Place Kléber and you’re in full tourist mode, but head the other direction and you’ll find yourself among locals doing their shopping at the little boulangerie on the corner (try their kougelhopf, seriously). The hotel doesn’t have parking – few places in this area do – but there’s a public garage about two blocks away, and honestly, you won’t need your car once you’re here anyway. Everything’s walkable, and the tram system is so efficient it almost makes you forget why you drove in the first place. I mean, the European Parliament is just a quick tram ride if that’s your thing, but really, you’ll probably spend most of your time wandering the cobblestone streets and discovering those half-timbered houses that look like they’re straight out of a fairy tale. The breakfast spread is decent – nothing fancy, but good coffee and fresh pastries, which is all you really need before heading out to explore. One small thing though: the Wi-Fi can be a bit spotty on the upper floors, so if you’re planning to work from your room, maybe mention that when you check in.

The concierge service in Strasbourg can arrange exclusive tours of Strasbourg Cathedral, secure reservations at traditional winstubs, and organize personalized visits to the European Parliament and UNESCO World Heritage Grande Île.

We booked Hotel Le Grillon for a short 2 night stay in Strasbourg and it proved to be an ideal base from which to explore the city, located around 5 minutes walk from the train station and around 10 minutes from the historic centre of Strasbourg.
Our room was clean and had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. All the staff we encountered were helpful and friendly.
The hotel was good value for money, and we’d recommend it to anyone looking for a convenient base without breaking the bank!

  • Cosy hotel, friendly staff, and a great location. Good value! – Phil from Denmark – 9 July 2025 (8/10)

Great location, friendly staff, good breakfast spread. The receptionist was very helpful and they have an agreement with the indigo parking not far away to obtain a cheaper rate, if traveling by car.

What could be improved: The hotel has some renovation going on so there might be some construction noise but it was during the day only and not disruptive.
