Hotel Description
You know what struck me first about Hotel des Vosges? The location is almost too good to be true – literally right on Place de la Gare, which means you can stumble out of Strasbourg’s main train station and you’re basically there. I mean, normally I’d be skeptical about staying so close to a train station (hello, noise and chaos), but honestly, this spot works. The square itself is actually quite elegant, and once you’re inside the hotel, you’d never guess you’re steps away from all those commuter trains. The building has this classic Alsatian charm that fits perfectly with Strasbourg’s whole vibe – none of that generic modern hotel nonsense that could be anywhere in the world.
What really won me over, though, was how the staff seemed to actually know the city. When I asked about getting to Petite France (because, let’s face it, that’s where everyone wants to go), the desk clerk didn’t just point me toward the tram – she mentioned that it’s a lovely 15-minute walk along Rue du Maire Kuss if the weather’s decent, and gave me this insider tip about ducking into Place Kléber if I needed coffee halfway there. The rooms themselves are solid 4-star territory without trying too hard to impress. Clean lines, comfortable beds, and – this matters more than you’d think – actual blackout curtains that work. The bathrooms are modern but not sterile, and there’s decent water pressure, which I’ve learned never to take for granted in European hotels.
Here’s the thing about staying right by the train station: it’s brilliant if you’re doing day trips to Colmar or even popping over to Germany (Kehl is literally 20 minutes away). But it’s also perfect for exploring Strasbourg itself because you’re not stuck in some residential area trying to figure out public transport. The cathedral is maybe a 10-minute walk through the old town, and you’ll pass about fifteen wine bars along the way – I’m just saying, plan accordingly. The hotel’s breakfast is actually worth getting up for, with proper croissants and local jams, though it can get busy around 8 AM when the business travelers are rushing off. If you’re more of a leisurely morning person, aim for 9:30 or later. One small thing – the elevators are a bit slow, but honestly, that just gives you more time to study the old photos of Strasbourg they’ve hung in there. It’s that kind of place where someone clearly thought about the details without making a big show of it.
