Hotel Description

You know what struck me first about Hôtel de l’Europe? The location is ridiculously perfect, but not in that touristy way where you’re surrounded by souvenir shops. It’s tucked on rue du Fossé des Tanneurs – honestly, I had to ask someone how to pronounce that street name – right in the heart of Strasbourg’s old quarter where actual locals still live and work. You’re literally a three-minute walk from the cathedral, but the street itself has this quiet, residential feel that means you can actually sleep at night.

The building has that classic Alsatian charm without feeling like a theme park version of it. I mean, the HappyCulture group has done something really smart here – they’ve kept all the character (those gorgeous wooden beams in the lobby, the narrow hallways that whisper stories) while making everything feel fresh and comfortable. The rooms aren’t huge – this is a historic building in Europe, so manage your expectations if you’re used to American hotel suites – but they’re thoughtfully designed. The beds are actually good, which honestly surprised me because I’ve stayed in plenty of boutique places where style trumped comfort. Here, someone clearly thought about both.

What I loved most was how the staff seemed to genuinely know Strasbourg. When I asked about dinner recommendations, the front desk guy didn’t just hand me a generic list – he asked what I was in the mood for and then gave me specific directions to this little winstub (that’s what they call traditional Alsatian restaurants) that I never would have found on my own. The breakfast situation is solid too, with local pastries and decent coffee, though if you’re expecting a massive American-style spread, you might want to temper those expectations.

The neighborhood really makes this place special. You’re surrounded by those impossibly picturesque half-timbered houses, but you’re also close enough to walk to excellent restaurants, proper local bars, and even some decent shopping that isn’t just tourist traps. Plus – and this matters if you’re driving – they can help arrange parking nearby, which in Strasbourg’s old town is basically like finding gold. The tram connections are right there too, so getting to the European Parliament or the newer parts of the city is easy.

Look, at 8.4 rating, this isn’t a perfect hotel, and I get why. It’s not luxurious in that marble-and-gold way some people expect from a 4-star place. But honestly? It’s exactly what I want when I’m exploring a city like Strasbourg – comfortable, charming, and positioned so well that you feel like you’re staying in the real heart of the place rather than some sanitized hotel district. If you’re the type of traveler who wants to wake up and immediately be part of the city’s rhythm rather than fighting through crowds to find it, this is your spot.

  • Amazing getaway – Linda from Switzerland – 11 June 2025 (8/10)

The location was perfect to visit the city. The room was nice and clean. The staff was kind and they were happy to help you with anything you need.

What could be improved: The parking isn’t at the property, but in a location nearby. That isn’t an issue cause the hotel gave us a discount. But it’s better to know it in advance.

The staff were excellent and very friendly and helpful.

What could be improved: The breakfast was a little bit disappointing.

  • Great place to stay in a great location! – Michael from United States – 3 June 2025 (9/10)

The hotel is located in the Old Town with a lot of restaurants and shops close by. It's only a 5-10 minute walk to La Petite Paris and the Cathedral. It's a 10-15 minute walk from the train station. Our room was quiet and the staff are helpful. We stayed there before and would stay there again.

    What could be improved: Nothing.
