Hotel Description

Look, I’ll be honest – when I first walked up to Hotel Cathédrale, I wasn’t sure what to expect. The building sits right there on Place de la Cathédrale, and I mean *right there* – you literally step out the front door and boom, you’re staring up at one of the most jaw-dropping Gothic cathedrals in Europe. It’s the kind of location that sounds almost too good to be true, but somehow this place pulls it off without feeling like a tourist trap.

The thing about staying this close to the cathedral is that you get to experience it at all hours, which honestly most visitors never do. Early morning when the light hits those rose windows? Incredible. Late evening when the crowds thin out and you can actually hear your footsteps on the cobblestones? Even better. Sure, it gets busy during the day – I mean, really busy, especially in summer – but the hotel staff actually knows this and they’re pretty good at helping you navigate around the chaos. They told me the best times to slip out for coffee (around 8 AM, before the tour groups arrive) and where to grab dinner that isn’t completely overrun with tourists. There’s this little winstub called Zum Strissel that’s maybe a three-minute walk away, tucked down one of those narrow medieval streets – the kind of place you’d walk right past if you didn’t know to look for it.

The rooms themselves are what you’d expect from a solid 4-star place, nothing revolutionary but comfortable enough. Mine faced the cathedral square, which was spectacular for photos but I won’t lie – it can get noisy during peak hours. If you’re a light sleeper, maybe ask for a room facing the back streets. The breakfast situation is pretty decent, and they actually have local stuff like proper Alsatian pastries alongside the usual hotel fare. What really impressed me though was how the staff seemed to genuinely know Strasbourg. When I asked about getting to Petite France (because honestly, who doesn’t want to see those half-timbered houses), they didn’t just point me toward the main tourist route – they suggested this quieter path along Rue des Moulins that follows the old canal. Takes maybe fifteen minutes on foot and you avoid most of the crowds.

I guess what struck me most was that this place manages to be right in the thick of everything without feeling overwhelming. You’re literally sleeping next to one of France’s most famous landmarks, but somehow it doesn’t feel gimmicky. The 7.7 rating makes sense to me – it’s not perfect (the wifi was a bit spotty on the upper floors, and parking nearby is basically impossible unless you’re willing to pay through the nose), but it delivers on what matters. If you want to really *feel* like you’re in Strasbourg, not just visiting it, this is probably your spot. Just book early if you’re coming during Christmas market season – I learned that one the hard way.

Enjoyed the location for the Christmas market. Understand the cost was a little higher due to the holiday season. The room was perfect for a solo traveler. The cleaning lady was very good & kind. The front staff was very helpful & nice.

What could be improved: The only thing is the hair dryer, it could be updated.

Situation exceptionnelle face à la cathédrale

    What could be improved: Rien

  • Great location and unbeatable views. – Melissa from United States – 10 November 2024 (7/10)

The location and views are great and the rooms are nicely decorated. They have nice amenities in the bathroom.

What could be improved: The shower door did not have a seal and there were gaps between the door and shower walls which caused the bathroom to flood horribly when showering. The street noise can be rather loud at night.
