You know what caught me off guard about Ecoterra? I was expecting another generic eco-hotel with bamboo everything and lectures about towel usage, but this place actually gets it right. It’s tucked away on Passage de la Gosseline – honestly, I walked past it twice before spotting the entrance because it blends so seamlessly into this quiet residential pocket of Strasbourg.

The whole sustainability thing here feels genuine rather than performative. They’ve got this gorgeous living wall in the lobby that smells faintly of herbs (I think there’s some thyme in there?), and the rooms use these locally-sourced linens that are somehow both crisp and soft. What I really appreciated was how they managed to make everything feel luxurious without being wasteful – like, the bathroom amenities come in refillable ceramic dispensers instead of those tiny plastic bottles, but the products themselves are actually really nice. The shower pressure is excellent, by the way, which isn’t always guaranteed in converted buildings like this one.

Location-wise, you’re about a fifteen-minute walk to the cathedral, but honestly that’s perfect because you avoid all the tourist chaos while still being close enough to everything. There’s this fantastic little bakery – Boulangerie Koenig – literally two minutes away where locals line up for their morning pastries, and if you head toward Rue du Faubourg de Pierre, you’ll hit some excellent wine bars that most visitors never find. The tram stop at Homme de Fer is maybe ten minutes on foot, so getting around is actually easier than staying right in the old town where everything’s pedestrian-only. Parking can be tricky in this neighborhood (street spots fill up fast), but the hotel has a small lot behind the building – just mention it when you book because they don’t advertise it much. The staff genuinely knows the city well too; the woman at reception gave me directions to this incredible choucroute place that I never would have discovered otherwise, and she was spot-on about which evenings it gets too crowded. I mean, with a 9.8 rating you’d expect good service, but these folks go beyond just being polite – they actually seem to enjoy helping you discover their city.

To book a hotel in Strasbourg during the famous Christmas Market season, visitors should make reservations well in advance as the city attracts holiday enthusiasts and culture lovers from around the world.

  Nice location , newish apartment blocks interspersed with much greenery. 3 minutes to boulangerie/cafe, 5 minutes to a small Carrefour. Good city bus connection. Pedestrian route along canal/river into centre.
