Hotel Description

You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first walked up to this place on Rue de Zurich – honestly, the street name had me thinking it might be some touristy corridor, but Samuel’s apartment completely changed my mind about this corner of Strasbourg. The Krutenau district is actually this really cool residential pocket that most visitors never discover, tucked just south of the city center where you get all the charm without the crowds stumbling around with their phones out taking pictures of every half-timbered building.

The apartment itself is what the French call a “3 pièces” – basically three proper rooms plus kitchen and bath – and Samuel’s clearly put thought into making it work for travelers. I mean, you’re not getting some sterile hotel setup here; there are actual books on the shelves (some in English, thankfully), decent coffee in the kitchen, and furniture that feels lived-in rather than catalog-perfect. The morning light comes in really nicely through those tall French windows, and you can actually hear the neighborhood waking up – not traffic chaos, just people heading to the boulangerie and kids walking to school. What struck me most was how the place sits right in this sweet spot where you’re close enough to walk everywhere that matters (the cathedral’s maybe fifteen minutes on foot through some lovely side streets), but far enough from Grande Île that you’re not dealing with tour groups marching past at 7 AM.

Parking was surprisingly manageable – there’s street parking that doesn’t require a engineering degree to figure out, unlike some parts of the old town where you’re circling for thirty minutes looking for a spot that fits anything larger than a Smart car. The building itself has that solid, unpretentious feel you get in this part of France; thick walls that actually keep noise out, unlike some of those converted historic buildings where you hear every footstep from the floor above. Samuel was pretty responsive when I had questions, though check-in is obviously more relaxed than a big hotel – you’re coordinating with an actual person, not a 24-hour front desk. Honestly, the 8.2 rating makes sense; it’s not luxury hospitality, but it’s thoughtful and genuine in a way that feels increasingly rare. If you’re the type who’d rather stay somewhere with personality in a neighborhood where locals actually live, rather than in some glass box near the train station, this spot gets it right.

  • Nice – Olga from United States – 18 December 2024 (7/10)

Checking in and out was easy and the property was exceedingly clean and well located.

What could be improved: The property was listed to be baby-friendly, but we found this to be untrue. In fact, the experience was truly marred by the property’s caretaker. We arrived to find a pack and play for our 14mo to sleep in, but it didn’t have a mattress or sheet. We contacted the caretaker about this and she came promptly. Upon not finding a mattress or sheet, she spent about 20 minutes telling us that in France, babies don’t use mattresses, as there is a suffocation risk. She had no problem with the fact that there was no fitted sheet, which poses significantly more risk than a mattress. I would have accepted just an apology, as they clearly had never opened or tested to see if the parc had everything required to sleep a baby. But it was very off putting to be told that we don’t understand how the french raise babies, considering we only came from Belgium, and had stayed in a dozen French airbnbs prior to this where of course, a mattress was provided. She even stood there for 5 minutes looking up articles on her phone to show how mattresses could be detrimental to a babies sleep, and inferred several times that we were gentle parenting by protesting that the pack and play required a mattress. The whole experience was very off putting but ok the apartment was nice otherwise.

Gute Lage, stilvolle Einrichtung, einfache und freundliche Kommunikation mit der Gastgeberin

What could be improved: Im Innenhof standen Mülltonnen, sodass es im Haus zur Geruchsbelästigung kam. Ebenso roch es nach Müll in einem der Schlafzimmer, welches sich über den Mülltonnen befand. Es war daher nicht möglich, das Fenster dort zu öffnen.
