You know what? I walked past Au Quai Des Pêcheurs probably a dozen times before actually staying there, and honestly, I was kicking myself for waiting so long. The thing about this place is that it sits right on the quay – I mean, literally right there where the fishermen used to dock their boats (hence the name) – and you get this view of the Ill River that most tourists never see because they’re all clustered around Petite France taking the same Instagram shots.

The hotel itself has that understated French elegance thing down perfectly. It’s a 4-star, sure, but it doesn’t hit you over the head with fancy marble or whatever. Instead, you’ve got these beautifully restored rooms that feel like someone’s chic aunt decorated them – comfortable but sophisticated, you know? The beds are actually decent (I’m picky about this), and the bathrooms have those deep European tubs that Americans always go crazy for. What really got me though was waking up and opening the windows to hear the water lapping against the quay instead of traffic noise. I mean, you’re still in the city center – the cathedral’s literally a 10-minute walk – but it feels removed from all that tourist chaos.

Here’s what nobody tells you about staying along the water in Strasbourg: the light is incredible, especially in the morning when it bounces off the river and into your room. And the staff actually knows the neighborhood – not just the obvious stuff, but like which bakery opens earliest (Maison Kammerzell if you’re wondering), or that there’s free parking along Quai Saint-Nicolas on Sundays. The concierge, this older gentleman whose name I never caught, steered me toward this tiny winstub tucked behind Place du Marché aux Cochons de Lait that I never would have found otherwise. That’s the kind of local knowledge that bumps a good hotel up to memorable.

The only minor thing – and I’m really reaching here because the place earned that 9.1 rating honestly – is that some of the riverside rooms can get a bit warm in summer since you’re facing south. But honestly? Just open the windows at night and you’ll sleep like a baby to the sound of the water. Plus, if you’re visiting during the Christmas markets (which, let’s be real, half of Strasbourg’s visitors are), you’re perfectly positioned to duck back to your room when the crowds get overwhelming, then head back out refreshed. It’s that sweet spot of being in the thick of things without being trapped in the tourist machine.

  Great location, walking distance to the city centre and the main tourist attractions. Good beds and shower, well kitted out apartment for cooking etc. Air conditioning units also.
